On a glorious day for rugby, Bonymaen were the visitors to Maes Dafydd for the quarter finals of the Swansea and District cup. Bonymaen are riding high in Section A, so having played Waunarlwydd lately who are also in the top end of that league with whom we had a real tough encounter against, we were under no illusions of what to expect. The boys arrived early and were really up for it as it proved in the first 20mins. Although we were playing up the slope it was mostly all us, with our forwards in particular taking it to the opposition. Bryn Davies kicked a penalty but it was Bonymaen who finished the half the stronger and showing their class with 2 well crafted converted tries. Half Time score Seven Seconds 3 – Bonymaen 14. It’s funny when you haven’t played against a team before especially a team riding high in a higher division than yourselves, sometimes you can give them a bit too much respect “early doors”, that certainly wasn’t the case today as we started the game excellently and although we couldn’t keep that up for the final period of the half, not a lot was said half time other than “same again please”. We were playing down the slope which is always an advantage but we needed to be wary of their strike runners especially their 10 and 12. Unfortunately, there was plenty of endeavour from us but the 2nd half started as the first finished with Bonymaen scoring 2 early tries. Making the score to date Bonymaen 26 – Seven Seconds 3. Another Bonymaen converted try around the 25 min mark really sealed our fate but there was plenty left from us. Our forwards were outstanding all game giving the much heavier opposition 8 a torrid time and it was deserving when we did finally get into “coffins corner” we drove over for an excellent driving lineout. Veteran hooker Nick French came up with the ball much to the delight of hooker Ryan Rogers who he had just replaced!! Bryn Davies failed with the difficult conversion. Another penalty from Bonymaen stretched their lead but we were at it again this time our 8 demolished the Bonymaen scrum again in “coffins corner” to score a well deserved push over try, number 8 Scott Williams coming away with the spoils, Bryn Davies failed with the conversion. The 80 minutes were up 5 minutes later and the official blew to call it a day. Final score Seven Seconds 13 – Bonymaen 36. It was a great performance from us and what summed it up really was when the opposition coach broke into our huddle after the game to say that was the toughest game they have had this season, so nothing really was needed to be said after that comment. The tough games though keep on coming with Glyneath next Thurs 19th in Banwen KO7pm in the Neath and District Cup. Lets carry the momentum on into that game.
