On a glorious day for rugby Penlan were the visitors to Sticlau Park. Unfortunately Penlan didn't have the numbers the previous week and had to cancel the fix but it was very pleasing to see them turn up this week with 20 odd players. Down the slight slope with the wind at our backs we started with a bang, camped in the bottom right hand corner after only 5 min into the game our 8 set out their stall shunting the Penlan pack time and time again at scrum time, after the third or fourth attempt the referee lost patience and awarded us a penalty try, Bryn Davies converted. What a start! Penlan unfazed by this struck back almost immediately by scoring a well taken but rather contentious converted try. Our scrum though was to prove our most potent weapon, anytime any form of scrum was called near the Penlan line we came away with points. This was mostly evident In the 20 min period after Penlan had scored their 7 pointer, where we produced 2 push over tries, number 8 Scott Williams diving over twice, one of these tries was converted by Bryn. Too finish the half fly half Bryn Davies was successful with a penalty but Penlan had the final say with another well taken converted try. Half time score Seven Sisters 22 Penlan 14. Penlan were still in the game but with our total dominance at the scrum it was only a matter of time before they cracked and apart from one successful penalty from the Penlan stand off the second half almost entirely belonged to us. Four tries were scored. Firstly skipper Lindsay Jones found himself in the wide open space on the right wing to crash over in the top right hand corner. Secondly after a series of innocuous rucks being formed around the Penlan 22, out popped blindside flanker Shane Rogers, with a subtle hint of a side step and a deceptive turn of pace he raced in from over 25M for an excellent individual try. Scott Williams then crashed over for his well deserved hat trick. The final word went to winger Jacob French who showed good strength to storm over again in the top right hand corner for a great individual try on his debut. Bryn Davies converted 1 of these tries in an excellent 30 min spell of rugby for us. Final score Seven Seconds 44 - Penlan 17. A lot of credit must go to Penlan for firstly honouring the fixture after struggling the week before and also completing the game with contested scrums, a facet of play where if they are honest they struggled to contain our 8 for large parts of the game. It was also great to see our team play a controlled and assured first half of rugby with our 8 dominant and with fly half Bryn Davies tactically kicking the ball in all the right areas. For us to then release the shackles in the second half and throw the ball around to score some excellent tries. Well done to all involved.
