Well after a few months off it was nice to get back into the Saturday "rugby routine". Our good friends Glyneath were the visitors in a rearranged friendly. Maes Dafydd was bathed in sunshine and both teams were looking to kick start their season off with a good performance. Playing down the slope we struck first (and no doubt I'll be saying this again sometime during the season !!) with a right royal rumble from the forwards down in coffins corner. Although we were looking comfortable a yard or so out, one of the Glyneath forwards got in an offside position to collapse the maul and a penalty try was awarded. Fly half Simon Borthwick added the extras. Glyneath though struck back immediately and scored 2 fine tries of their own, both were converted. Camped again down in coffins corner our eight rumbled over after a great line out take (see told you !!) hooker Ryan Rogers coming up with the spoils, this went unconverted. Half time score Seven Sisters 12 - Glyneath 14. The half time talk was positive, but it's strange, if last years reports were read out almost certainly this next sentence in some of the games we played would have been written. Our forwards were more than holding their own but Glyneath had some pacey backs out wide who looked dangerous with ball in hand and were causing us problems, to be fair our back line also was asking questions as well whenever they were attacking. Unfortunately for us the next 20min or so belonged to Glyneath and they scorched away for 3 tries almost certainly putting the game to bed, or that's what you would have thought. At the end of that period we could have thrown into the towel but credit to us we fought back and scored 2 cracking tries of our own. Firstly evergreen hooker Nick French powered over close to the line. Simon Borthwick converted and after a fine passage of play centre Gareth Davies finished off an excellent team move. Score to date was 33-24 to Glyneath with 10 mins left and we were definitely back in the game. Unfortunately Glyneath had other ideas and their impressive centre stormed over for 2 converted tries under the posts right at the death to put the game to bed. Final score Seven Seconds 24 - Glyneath 47. It was an entertaining game and at one stage it looked like we were crawling our way back to record an impressive victory, but credit to Glyneath they are an excellent side and thoroughly deserved the win in the end. Lots of positives though to take into our first league encounter of the season over in vardre this Saturday.
