Match Report by Hywel Evans!

Season starts with a comprehensive win!

After our excellent friendly verses our neighbours Abercrave last week, this Saturday saw the return of our first league fixture for the new campaign. After a bit of rejigging of the 2 Swansea and district leagues we find ourselves in the B league for season 2014-15. Although its a drop down from last season there are still good teams in the league and lots to play for during the forthcoming season. Neath Athletic were the visitors to Maes Dafydd and brought up a decent team but it was us who dominated the first quarter of the half going down the slope. Time and again we pressed the althetic try line but all we came away with was a penalty by outside half Bryn Davies. This was due to great defence from the athletic and silly penalties from us as we were about to strike the killer blow in their red zone. Although it was only a matter of time before they cracked and after a driving line-out down in "coffins" flanker Mark Johnson came up with the spoils Bryn Davies converted excellently. Two more Bryn Davies penalties brought the half time score to seven seconds 16 - Neath Athletic 0. Not alot was said at half time just carry on the good work from the 1st half and more points will follow as we strung some real good stuff together as a team during that 1st 40. Neath Athletic had some decent players especially the young centre and back rower who were causing us problems when they had the ball. It was us though who scored the second try with some great rumbling from the forwards with prop Ashley James to the fore resulting with Lindsay our skipper coming up from under the pile of black and green bodies over the Athletic try line. Bryn Davies converted. We made some changes but that didn't affect us and a great handling passage between backs and forwards resulted in scrum half Johnny Griffiths finishing off a fine move by scampering over in the top right hand corner another great conversion followed by Bryn who really had his kicking boots on. The Athletic boys were now getting tired as our large squad started to wear them down and the final scoring act saw winger Jay Holloway hack through after a spilt pass from an Athletic player from the half way and after showing great footballing skills managed to control the ball and dive over in the corner for an excellent individual score. Bryn Davies failed to convert. It was a good run out against a spirited Athletic side. Its 2 from 2 for us and although it very early days we will take the 2 wins from 2 good encounters and it sets us up nicely for Vardre away next sat.
